The development of virtPresenter Software has stopped! We are concentrating our resources on Opencast Matterhorn Projekt here you can finde many experiences we made by deveolpint virtPresenter.
About the project
The virtPresenter framework has been developed at the University of Osnabrück “Center for Information Management and Virtual Teaching” (virtUOS). Development started in 2002. virtPresenter is a combination of different software programs. It contains components for the semi or fully automatic recording and post-production as well as distribution and replay. A major feature of the virtPresenter is an automatic production chain, which is started by running a Powerpoint-Presentation or a VNC screenrecording. As a result, the recording is avaiable online on the web or as Podcast. Research is primarily been conducted in the directions of innovative interfaces, automatic production and alternative content formats.
In the beginning of the projects at the University of Osnabrück in 2002 only two or three courses were recorded per term. By the end of 2008 the total number of automatic generated lecture objects in the university’s public accessible multimedia repository (http://www.lernfunk.de) is expected to be around 1,000.
Architecture
The following picture shows the setup of the virtPresenter with his services. First of all should be mentioned that a computer-icon in the majority of cases simply describes a service, which runs on a computer. Therefore some of these services can be combined. Not every service needs an own server. At high utilisation it’s possible to distribute the services on several computers. All computers mustn’t run exclusively for the virtPresenter.
